TWENTY-NINE

Now

Tailing someone always looks so easy in the movies. The target is usually wearing something to mark them out against other people, allowing the detective or secret agent to easily keep sight of them. And more often than not the tail has a team of surveillance experts backing them up off camera, talking through an ear piece. Well, that’s not how this looks.

For starters, I can barely see Ruby now that she has an umbrella up. She’s a much quicker walker than I think I gave her credit for, because as soon as I’d made it to the pavement, she was already halfway down and across the road. I really didn’t plan this following either. For all I knew she could have climbed into Jamie’s car and been gone with me unable to keep up on foot. Maybe I should have brought my car, but then Ruby would have noticed it, and that would have blown my cover. I’m just going to have to hope that she plans to reach her final destination solely on foot.

The rain is relentless, but it’s that fine kind that forms a mist in the air and doesn’t look powerful enough to dampen clothes, yet manages to soak right through. I’m relieved I grabbed my waterproof coat as I left, but my jeans are now sticking to my thighs, and my trainers are squelching with every step.

I’m breathless as I make it to the bottom of the road, jogging the last few metres just to try and gain some ground on Ruby. She’s already turned and is on her way along the high street towards the small run of bespoke shops on the left-hand side. I can just about make out a navy blue umbrella, and I can only hope it is hers, as for all I know she might have turned off, and I could just as easily be following someone else. I don’t have my glasses on as they would keep misting up in this rain, so I’m having to squint to keep track of her. What I would give for that back-up team off camera.

The other thing you always see in the movies when a suspect is being followed is the number of spots where the tail can duck in and hide should the target turn and check for a tail. But this top end of the high street is residential, and each garden is fenced off, so if Ruby turns to check behind her, there really is nowhere I can go, save for diving over a fence, which is not something I’m envisaging doing. Deciding I need better cover, I cross the road, so that if she turns immediately behind her, she won’t spot me. This side of the road is lined with oak and sycamore trees, and despite the time of year, there are still sufficient leaves to provide an element of protection against the weather.

I can’t work out exactly where she’s going, but we’re definitely not heading towards the library.
